Kimberly was established in 1889. It was named in honor of John A. Kimberly, one of Kimberly-Clark's cofounders. The Kimberly Clark Company founded a pulp and paper mill in the area in 1889. Outagamie County was established in 1850. The name of the county is derived from an Anishinaabe term meaning "dwellers on either shore."
