Jean Nicolet, a French Explorer, came by canoe and named the large body of water La Baye Verte ( Green Bay). The territory was first ruled by the French and then later by the British until the war of 1812 when the United States won the right to the territory. Because of the ideal transportation route of the Great Lakes waterway and an abundance of flowing water through the Fox River, Green Bay became a thriving economic area with dominance in Metal Smelting, Lumber production and Paper Products. Now Green Bay is known for their professional NFL football team, the Green Bay Packers, which uniquely is owned by the local community not an individual or Corporation. The Packers give Green Bay an image of being a mega metropolitan area, when in reality, it is a quaint community of less than 120,000 population.
